Jimmy Spicer, le rappeur derrière le légendaire «Money (Dollar Bill Y'all)», est mort

La scène hip-hop est en deuil puisque l'icône du rap américain Jimmy Super Rhymes Spicer est mort vendredi dernier, le 27 septembre 2019, dans un hôpital de Brooklyn à l'âge de 61 ans. Jimmy Spicer a été actif au début des années 1980 et a eu un impact énorme sur la scène hip-hop avec une série de singles, incluant Adventures of Super Rhyme (Rap), considéré comme l'un des premiers storytelling du rap, puis Money (Dollar Bill Y'all) qui a été repris et samplé par un grand nombre de rappeurs, dont Wu-Tang Clan qui la chante en introduction de la mythique C.R.E.A.M.!

Money (Dollar Bill Y'all) a été produite par le défunt hit producer Larry Smith, derrière des productions de Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys ou encore Run-DMC. Il a été samplé des dizaines et des dizaines de fois, notamment par De La Soul, Maino et Kanye West, puis repris par Coolio.

En 2018, Jimmy Spicer a annoncé publiquement qu'il était atteint d'un cancer du cerveau et des poumons. Le légendaire rappeur avait alors demandé l'aide de la communauté hip-hop par le biais d'une campagne de sociofinancement. Il y a quelques jours, l'une de ses quatre filles a publié une photo avec son père, annonçant le décès du mythique rappeur. La nouvelle fait présentement le tour de tous les médias hip-hop américains.

Two days later 9/27 My father #HipHopPioneer #JimmySpicer joined her. My creative gene and talent stem directly from them. My grandma was a classically trained pianist and singer and who introduced me to live theater. In high school when I studied abroad in Spain my grandma sent hand wrote letters every week letting me know she was right by my side! My first performance was on stage with my dad at 2 years old. Apparently I upstaged him because I didn’t want to give back the mic. These two are a critical part of my foundation both as an artist and a woman and I am speechless to have lost them within days of each other. I appreciate the outpouring of love and support. I have been struggling privately for some time now and although I’m going to push through and complete our documentary, I am taking this moment to soak up all of your love and support.
